The Axis

In a land across a dark sky, there is one who lives alone,

Here's the hand that holds the Axis, and upon a shining throne,

Sat a wondrous love of beauty such as I had never known,

I just fell down to my knees, felt my body turn to stone.

We played as little children, in a noon day summer sun,

Such a thrill of joy within me, felt myself in everyone.

As my love sang a song in harmony with all I'd ever seen,

To name the source of everything and everywhere that's ever been.

And now that we can all see, why be blind and deaf and dumb,

Would you also have no feeling who take a lamp to seek the sun.

And the prophets words are written, as a new age comes to dawn,

To us a child is given, to us a child is born.

My love joined us in our secret, in a jewel of perfect peace,

As a treasure that would bind us, where no thief can enter in,

And this truth my love told me, where your treasure is there will your heart be also,

For my part I gave myself to love and trust for evermore.

And my lover let me realize, the light of the body is the eye,

If therefore your eye be single, your whole body will be full of light,

But if your eye be evil your whole body shall be full of darkness,

If therefore the light in you be darkness how great will that darkness be.

Why can't you see what I see, are you blind and deaf and dumb,

Would you also have no feeling who take a lamp to seek the sun.

And the prophets words are written, as a new age comes to dawn,

To us a child is given, to us a child is born.

No man can serve two masters, for while he may love the one,

He must sure neglect the other, you cannot walk two roads at once,

If I would be true to my love I must walk a path of perfect peace,

Take no thought of what tomorrow, trust my love to guide me through the dark.

And I have seen a vision, of a bird as pure as light,

She will not drink from muddy water,

Than be imperfect she would rather die,

She catches raindrops in the air as they are falling from the sky,

Life without my love would be like noon without the sun, as black as night.

And now that we can all see, why be blind and deaf and dumb,

Would you also have no feeling who take a lamp to seek the sun.

And the prophets words are written, as a new age comes to dawn,

To us a child is given, to us a child is born.

The word is written in their foreheads, that the prince of peace has come,

and this little child will lead us to his home within the sun,

he is the son, the only one, he is the sun.

The Axis is about the power at the center of all things, everywhere, forever. The lyrics draw from several mythologies. The initial image for the beginning verse was inspired by the Islamic story of Mohammed receiving the Koran from Allah. The references to "where your treasure is" and the "light of the body is the eye" are from the Christian testament, as is the line "no man can serve two masters". The vision of the bird that "catches raindrops as they are falling from the sky" is from a Hindu source, while the idea of a little child leading us home to our creator is common to many mythologies. Perhaps the child is the master within us all, at our center, waiting for us to find him, in the play of our lives.
